As I promised, here’s part two of the recommendations for energy saving at home.

4. Replace the frames of all windows and doors with the modern materials like PVC or aluminum. It isn’t very cheap, but it guarantees you a 30% reduction in electricity bills. When altering your windows, try to make them as big as possible. With such renovation you will let maximum sunshine in and thus reduce the need for lighting a bit. Choose a glazing with inert gas in it, windows that stop the UV light and windows with large profile thickness with suspended bridges. You can even put a second door.

5. Paint your walls with modern light-reflecting paints of bright colors. Install economical lamps sconces, chandeliers and plafonds that aren’t narrowing the light but reflect it – achieving the maximum out of each light lumen. Put more mirrors in your home. They reflect light and increase the overall ambient light in the room.

6. Put external thermal insulation that includes every ledge of your apartment and if you live in a building, where your flat is between others, then it’s good for the insulation to take up to 30 cm from the neighboring walls. Top the whole thing with some sort of eaves or shed to stop any dripping water into the insulation, as the Germans would say “A wet sweater does not keep warm”.

7. If you live on the first or last floor pay careful attention to the insulation on your floor or ceiling, because the fact that warm air rises gives an opportunity for 20% of the heat to escape through a badly insulated ceiling. Even if you are somewhere in the middle you should also think about insulating the floor and ceiling. After all you can’t rely on your neighbors to keep you warm…

8. Put a timer on your water heater, set its thermostat to a lower temperature, 55 – 60 degrees for example,  and the switch on the first level for maximum economy. The timer is to be adjusted to turn on the heater at least one hour after the official start of the electricity night rate, as well as to turn the heater off one hour before the end of it. This is because often the timers of the energy distributors are quite inaccurate.

9. When cooking at home use utensils equal in size to the heating plate as it is advisable to use inductive or metal-ceramic plated ovens or at least with gas stove burners. There are modern appliances that can cook several dishes simultaneously through the deployment of vessels floors. With the help of such innovations you can, for example, put meat in the lowest cooker, a hot side dish of potatoes, carrots, broccoli and beetroot in the middle and rise in the top container with thin wall bed. Moreover it is advisable to turn off the device 10 or 15 minutes before the end of the process, relying on the remaining temperature in the vessels for final completion of the cooking products.
