What is VoIP?

This is actually a technology that allows the transmission of voice data over the Internet. VoIP – Voice over internet protocol (IP). In other words, when there is internet connection, no matter what the transfer technology is (wireless, optics, modem, etc.) the voice transmission is also possible.

The Internet telephony aims to unite all clients (phones) and redirect them to other ones. Here we want to clarify that we are not obliged to use a phone – we can use a computer, smartphone or tablet software as well. The advantage of the modern Internet telephony lies in its promptness and flexibility. Let’s make a brief comparison with the familiar telephone services. Let’s take a look at the so-called landlines and mobile phones. In contrast to them, with the VoIP phone we can talk with our colleagues in the office no matter in which part of the world we are, if only there is Internet connection. In addition, the service is completely free. Another advantage is that we can call for instance from America to a landline or a mobile phone in Bulgaria and talk at the price which the operator has determined for national calls. The scheme for conversations with partners and satellite offices is both very convenient and free, provided that we make a trunk between two exchanges or we all connect to the same exchange. Using an exchange instead of directly connecting to the VoIP provider has advantages – through the exchange we can direct each call to the appropriate provider, thus dramatically reducing the costs.

Let’s explain a standard topology:

1. A telephone exchange
2. Two providers of VoIP.
– the first one having a cheap price for national landlines;
– the second one having a cheap price for international landlines;
3. Two offices using the exchange with ten subscribers in each office.

PBX-between-two offices

In this case, the conversations between the two offices are completely free because virtually they are one and the same office with the same exchange.

When a subscriber of our internal network decides to dial a phone number, for example 0044 123 456789, the exchange automatically redirects the call to the provider of IP telephony in England. In this way we carry on a conversation with an English phone for the price of a call within England. Old analogue exchanges use the same method – prefix 0044 means transfer to the line for international calls. Of course, if we dial 044 123 456, this will not be sent to the international supplier but to the national one.
